Learn to Knit with Videos

Whether you're learning to knit or just need to brush up on a technique or two, these videos will show you how to do the most common stitches used in knitting. The abbreviations for each stitch are given as it applies. Click any link below to see the video. If the links don't work on your device, scroll down the page. All of the videos on this page are also on my YouTube channel KweenBee Crafts. Be sure to subscribe so you can see all my latest knitting posts and pattern how-to's.

If you are just starting your knitting journey, the videos are in the most logical order. Master each stitch in the order that is given. Once you are comfortable with casting on stitches, move onto the knit stitch, purl stitch, etc. A good beginner project is a scarf. You can make it with the garter stitch (knitting every row) or ribbed (alternating between knitting a couple stitches and purling a couple stitches on the same row).

If you need help or pointers, you can try emailing me at kweenbee_crafts@hotmail.ca. I will email back if I can. You can also try leaving questions in the comments. Help each other. It's good karma after all. Happy knitting and good luck!

Cast On
The start of your work. The pattern will tell you how many stitches to cast on.

Knit Stitch - K
The basic stitch in knitting.

Purl Stitch - P
This makes the knit stitch on the wrong side of the work. When combined with the knit stitch in alternate rows, it gives creates stockinette or stocking stitch.

Knit 1 Purl 1 Rib - K1P1
On the same row, alternate between a knit stitch and a purl stitch. Patterns sometimes call for different numbers of knit and purl stitches such as K2P2 or K3P1. This combination creates a stretchy effect along the width.

Knit 2 Together - K2tog
Knit two stitches together. It DECREASES the number of stitches. One stitch for every 2 stitches knitted together.

Yarn Over - YO
Pull the yarn forward before you knit the stitch. This INCREASES the number of stitches. It also makes a hole in your work. Good for small buttons or to create interesting patterns to your work.

How to Pick Up Stitches
Great for collars on finished pieces or to add on to a piece. I use it to add the heel flap in my slipper patterns.

Gather Stitches
Draws the stitches together. Great for ending the toe section of slippers, tops of hats, or to end the thumb of mittens.

Bind Off or Cast Off
How to end your work so it won't unravel.

Fluff or Loop Stitch - FS
I use this in a number of different patterns I've written. Specifically, my Monster Purse and Sheep Slippers.

How to Basics

Here are the basics that everyone needs to know.  So far, the focus is on knitting lessons but I have thrown in some crochet tutorials to spice things up.  If you are so inclined, you can also go to my channel on YouTube, KweenBee Crafts, and see all of my how-to videos.

Scroll through the thumbnails along the bottom of the video player to find the knitting stitch you are looking for.  Click the video and it will play on this page.  If you no longer want to watch the video you selected, click the video again.  To see the list of knitting videos again, click the PLAYLIST icon.  It's the first icon on the bottom right.

For a bit of extra help I've included some crochet techniques.  I wasn't sure where else to link up to them so here they are.

Knit a Simple Dishcloth

This is a great project for anyone who is just learning how to knit. It's not an overly complicated project and the yarn is easy to find and not too expensive. Best of all the final result gives you something you can use, even if it doesn't turn out perfectly 😉
